Whether on the water or on the shore, these pocket-size devices will never let a dead battery leave you in the clutch.

“Aw, man, the phone’s about dead!”
How many times have we said that when out on the water?
Increasingly, we rely on portable electronics to catch fish. And even when we don’t, our phones are always with us, rapidly losing power while searching for signals in remote areas, consuming juice as we listen to music, take photos, grab videos of our on-the-water adventures, or instantly share our catches on social media.
In short, we use a lot of power in the field, and most of the time our phones and other devices don’t have enough reserve to see us through an entire day of fishing.
Well, there’s a cure for that.
Recently we came across a couple of slick products from a company called Weego. One is a rechargeable battery pack designed for powering up your phone or tablet when there’s no chance of plugging in. The other is a jumpstarter for 12V auto and marine batteries. What we find so appealing about these is that they’re so small. Like, really small. For example, imagine being able to jumpstart the dead battery in your V8-powered truck with a device that can literally fit inside your shirt pocket. That’s what the Weego line is all about.
There are three versions of the Weego rechargeable battery packs. Which one you choose depends on your device needs. The Compact model (3×6.75×1.25 inches) is good for one to one and a half charges of a cell phone, depending on the type of phone you have. The Midsize model (4.13×7.5×1.25 inches) can give you up to three phone charges or one tablet charge, while the Full-Size version (5x9x1.25 inches) is good for up to six phone charges or three tablet charges. To use, simply connect the battery pack to your device via the supplied USB cord. With their small size and weight (.35, .40, and .75 lbs., respectively), the Weego battery packs can fit just about anywhere…your creel, tackle box, fishing vest, or cargo pocket. Now you don’t have to worry about having enough power to record that 8-pound bass you just know you’ll catch right at sundown.
That takes care of the small stuff. What about the big stuff…you know, the batteries that can leave you stranded in the worst place at the worst possible time? For that, Weego makes the Jump Starter Battery+ line of battery packs. Again, three models are offered—Standard, Heavy Duty, and Professional. They’re also quite compact. The Standard is the smallest at 5.5x3x.625 inches and the large Professional model is a trim 9×3.5×1.125 inches.
The Jump Starter Battery+ models are capable of firing up both gas and diesel automotive or marine engines—up to most any displacement gas engine and up to 4.8L diesel engines, plus both inboard and outboard marine engines. There’s a handy specification chart on the Weego website to help you determine which model best suits your needs.
“Our small, high-powered Weego Jump Starters are perfect for boaters,” says Weego’s CEO, Gerry Toscani. “And since lithium-ion batteries only lose about two percent of their power per month, you can throw it in a safety kit or locker and forget about it for about 12 months.”
Operation of the Jump Starter Battery+ is as easy as attaching the jumper cable assembly between the battery pack and ailing 12V battery, turning on the unit, and then starting the engine. The device has an ideal operating temperature range of -4 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit, which pretty much covers the conditions most of us fish in. And lest you think the Jump Starter Battery+ is a one-trick wonder, think again. Included in the kit is an array of charging interfaces that allow you to power up 12V and 19V devices. This means you can charge your phones, tablets, laptops, and more, plus jumpstart your engine battery all in one compact device.
All Weego battery packs and jumpstarters come with a generous 18-month warranty. The battery packs are good for up to 500 charge/discharge cycles, while the jumpstarters will see you through up to 1,000 full charge/discharge cycles. What’s more, the full line of Weego products are priced surprisingly low. From the $19.99 Compact Rechargeable Battery Pack to the $189 Professional Jump Starter Battery+, there’s a model and price point to suite any need or budget.
We all know the pain of losing juice in the field. Sometimes it’s the mere annoyance of a dead phone battery; at other time it can be something more serious, like your 12V battery giving up the ghost in some lonely bass cove. Fortunately, with Weego, you can always get fired back up.
